Day 1: Anacortes to Marblemount

Anacortes is quite beautiful. I drove Wes and Will to the ferry on the coast of Anacortes. There, they did the obligitory dip of their bikes into in the lake. Will is riding a Roubaix Disc with ultegra components while Wes has chosen to go with a steel touring frame and tiagra components. I plan to use Wes's road bike once and a while if I get bored and want to tag along for some portions.

Once we got off the coast, it was sunny, but clouds loomed over the coast. A rainbow even appeared at one point. What a treat! A main difference I noticed was many of the semi trucks were carrying lumber rather than a cargo container. It's quite fascinating to think about the different sort of industry that exists on the west coast as opposed to elsewhere in the country.

Later on in the ride, we approached some small towns. One of the towns, Concrete, had a towering structure with a welcome sign painted on the side if it. It must have been over three stories tall. I passed by a gluten free bakery, which appeared to be the most happening place in town.

At the end of the day, Will and Wes had biked over one hundred miles, which is quite impressive. Their winter of training has seemingly prepared them well for the next few dozen days to come. While there was no climbing today, tomorrow will consist of two 4000 foot passes through the cascades. I am currently in Marblemount, WA. Wes has elected to stay in a hotel the first night just to get things kicked off to a good start. We have plans to camp tomorrow night.
